Research at DEgIDAL

Last updated Oct. 2023

The overarching research aim of the Digitalized Electrical grid Innovations, Developments & Applications Laboratory (DEgIDAL) is ensuring the security, stability, reliability and acceptable power quality of interconnected power systems with high shares of renewables for all customers equitably. The inherent intricacies of electrical grid physics are exacerbated by the gradual acceleration of electromechanical phenomena times, due to the displacement of inertia-heavy conventional units by inverter-based resources. This trend unravels while power systems are also suffering from poor monitoring and scarce maintenance of an overall ageing infrastructure – both components and software.

At DEgIDAL, we believe that synchronized measurements of high frequencies, paired with digital models/twins of grid components and processes, and controlled with artificial intelligence methods trained on real (albeit incomplete and noisy) data pave the main path to decarbonize electrical power systems, while retaining their security and enhancing them with resilience. Given the fact that grid investments are particularly pricey, leading to inequality in access to high quality of electricity service (especially in poorer states and communities of minorities and color), we prioritize cost-aware operation and planning in all aspects of our work.
