Join us! 2 PhD Seats Open at this Table
We are excited to welcome at the DEgIDAL two (2) PhD students starting in Fall ’25. DEgIDAL is part of the Dept. of Electrical Engineering (EE) at the City College of the University of New York (ranked 4th behind the top world colleges in the value of the EE degree). Each student receives 3-year guaranteed funding (at the highest research assistant rate) and 5 years of tuition coverage.
Successful applicants must demonstrate (via transcripts or peer-reviewed publications) :
- either strong power systems and electric machines background (transient state, vector control, power electronics) and some coding experience (preferably in artificial intelligence).
- or strong machine learning and optimization background (Bayesian statistics, cone programming, neural networks, decision trees, SVMs, clustering, genetic algorithms, stochastic programming) and some experience in linear circuits and electricity markets.
The 3 main areas of research at DEgIDAL are:
- Novel pricing paradigms for hybrid Renewable Energy Sources (hRES): Integrating renewables with other resources (thermal & hydro units, batteries, etc.) within hRES, allows cost aggregation for integrated pricing and internal balancing of the overall volatility.
- Digital twins and artificial intelligence control for grid stability with high penetrations of renewables: As renewables displace conventional generation, instability will propagate faster, thus, only artificial intelligence and machine learning may identify efficiently such risks.
- Equitable and fair quality of service at distribution systems: EIA reports and severe weather events have indicated lack of upgrades at the distribution systems of, especially, underrepresented and poorer communities. It is imperative to rethink distribution grid planning and operation.
For expression of interest and additional information, please, email me at my CCNY address found in the second to last line here, and set the subject line as “interest to join DEgIDAL group – (your last name)”.
I will NOT reply to applicants who meet neither of the 2 background criteria or do not follow the contact instructions.
