The background is a rearrangement of “The Graduate” (Blashfield, 1907; oil on canvas mounted in the Great Hall of Shepard Hall at the CCNY). Alma Mater wearing the Phrygion Cap of Liberty stands next to the Graduate and points to the seated statue of Wisdom holding the Globe. To Wisdom’s immediate left sits Athens, as the depiction of one of the 10 female figures typifying great, past educational epicenters. Second from the left is Democritus, representing Philosophy among the other seated male figures suggesting some of the great subdivisions of the Sciences and Arts.
